Breaking News

On a crisp Saturday morning, June 21, 2025, the heart of Singapore’s vibrant Little India pulsed with purpose as the Abdul Kalam Vision Society (AKVS) orchestrated a powerful tribute to a global icon. Around the historic Indian Heritage Centre, few dozens of volunteers, clad in distinctive blue, participated in a meticulous litter-picking activity, marking the solemn 10th death anniversary of India’s beloved former President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. This wasn’t just a cleanup; it was a living embodiment of Dr. Kalam’s enduring ideals: education, innovation, and unwavering social service to the Singapore community.

Since its inception in 2017, AKVS has consistently translated vision into tangible action. From life-saving blood donation drives to vital tree-planting initiatives, their commitment to community betterment is unwavering. Cleanliness, a cornerstone of Singaporean identity, has always been a central pillar of AKVS’s efforts, evident in their continuous dedication to transforming public spaces through both litter and beach cleanups. These efforts resonate deeply with the vision of Singapore’s founding father, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, who famously initiated the “Keep Singapore Clean” campaign in 1968 and the annual “Tree Planting” Campaign in 1971, laying the groundwork for the clean and green city we know today.

The day began early, around 8:30 AM, with a palpable sense of anticipation. Mr. Arumai Chandran, AKVS President, set a thoughtful tone, extending a warm welcome and eloquently articulating Singapore’s profound commitment to cleanliness. A moment of quiet reflection followed, as attendees observed a minute of silence for the late Mr. Murugaiya Ramachandra, the revered founder of Jothi Store flower shop, who had recently passed away.

The presence of Mr. R Rajaram, Chairman, Indian Heritage Centre and the event’s distinguished Guest of Honour, elevated the occasion. He delivered a stirring address, drawing inspiration from Dr. Kalam’s profound principles and reaffirming the Centre’s steadfast support for community endeavours. A poignant gesture saw him respectfully garlanding Dr. Kalam’s photograph, a silent yet powerful testament to a shared legacy.

The spirit of volunteerism shone brightly. Around 40 dedicated individuals, a compelling mix of bright-eyed students, seasoned professionals, and highly respected social activists, converged. Many arrived with their families, transforming the cleanup into a deeply personal and collective act of civic duty. Crucially, the National Environment Agency provided invaluable support, granting official approval and equipping the teams with the necessary tools – a true partnership for progress. This collective spirit of civic responsibility, championed by individuals and organizations alike, is a testament to the enduring values that have shaped Singapore over its 60 years of independence (SG60).

Divided into eight efficient groups, the volunteers fanned out with purpose, meticulously clearing every corner around the Indian Heritage Centre. Their focused effort began with a nourishing breakfast and concluded by 11:00 AM, leaving a noticeably pristine environment in their wake. The impact was profound, with many participants voicing a shared conviction: the imperative to pass these vital values of responsibility and community spirit on to future generations.

The seamless execution of the event was a testament to the meticulous planning of the AKVS committee members, expertly coordinated by AKVS Secretary Mr. Venkatesan Balasubramanian and Vice President Mr. Yousuf Rowther Rajid Ahmad. The organization itself stands on strong shoulders, benefitting from the ongoing guidance of luminaries such as Mr. K. Kesavapany, Singapore’s former Ambassador, and Mr. Ameerali Abdeali, Justice of Peace, both of whom have previously steered AKVS and continue to provide invaluable mentorship.
The Abdul Kalam Vision Society’s latest initiative was far more than a simple cleanup. It was a vibrant affirmation of collective purpose, a tangible manifestation of civic pride, and a heartfelt continuation of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s enduring legacy. Through such dedicated and impactful actions, AKVS continues to weave the fabric of a cleaner, more conscious, and profoundly more connected Singapore.
