12th International Day of Yoga was celebrated by High Commission of India in Singapore in partnership with Gardens by the Bay at West Lawn, on 21st June 2026. The event witnessed participation from over 350 yoga enthusiasts.

Mr. Baey Yam Keng, Minister of State (MOS), Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth & Ministry of Transport and Mayor, North East District graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. The event commenced with a welcome address by the High Commissioner of India, who emphasized the timeless value and universal appeal of yoga.

High Commissioner remarked that “This year’s global theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, highlights the timeless wisdom that true well-being comes from nurturing balance between the body, mind, and society. In an era marked by changing health challenges, lifestyle-related concerns, and the need for sustainable living, yoga offers a holistic pathway towards vitality, resilience, and a balanced way of life. Singapore, with its strong commitment to multiculturalism, wellness, and sustainable development, has embraced yoga with great enthusiasm and inclusiveness. It is inspiring to see yoga becoming an integral part of everyday life – flourishing in schools, parks, community spaces, and wellness centres across the island.”

Mr. Baey Yam Keng delivered the keynote speech, emphasising the importance of yoga in fostering a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Minister Baey Yam Keng remarked that “Yoga is more than just healthy exercise. Its origins trace back more than 5,000 years, beginning as a spiritual practice in the Indian subcontinent. Today, it has become a global movement accessible to people of all ages, fitness levels, and backgrounds. You can see this from the diversity of participants here this morning, and at International Yoga Day celebrations held around the world.

Events like today’s are also a reminder of the deep and longstanding cultural and people-to-people ties between Singapore and India. Yoga is one of the many cultural threads that draw our people together – alongside food, music, art and festivals – and events like this help us better appreciate our shared heritage.”

The yoga session was conducted by experienced instructors from Vyasa Yoga, who guided the participants through various asanas and pranayama techniques, ensuring an invigorating and rejuvenating experience for all.

21st June was recognized as the International Day of Yoga (IDY) by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in December 2014 at the initiative of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. The proposal was first introduced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly. The IDY Resolution moved by India secured unanimous consent, which was a record in itself. Since 2015, the IDY has been an occasion that is observed around the world with great enthusiasm.

Yoga, an ancient practice originating in India, has transcended geographical and cultural boundaries to become a global phenomenon. Recognized for its myriad benefits, yoga integrates the body, mind, and spirit, promoting holistic health and well-being. The practice of yoga enhances flexibility, strength, and posture while also alleviating stress and anxiety, leading to a more balanced and harmonious life.

On this occasion, congratulations were extended to the Singapore team for their outstanding performance at the 1st World Yogasana Sports Championship, held from 4th to 8th June 2026 in Ahmedabad, India. Winning seven medals at this prestigious global championship is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the dedication, discipline, and excellence of the athletes. This accomplishment further strengthens the growing bond between India and Singapore through the shared values of yoga, wellness, and cultural exchange.

The High Commission of India extended its heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Minister Mr. Baey Yam Keng, the participants, the organising team from Gardens by the Bay and all the partners and volunteers who contributed to the success of the International Day of Yoga 2026 celebration. The event not only promoted the benefits of yoga but also reinforced the cultural ties and people-to-people connections between India and Singapore.
