Tamil and Chinese cultures – July 1st, 2005
Tamil and Chinese cultures are those among the most ancient cultures. Both cultures have similar beliefs and traditions. These similarities could be illustrated from the rituals of the Chinese New Year that goes in line with the overall belief of the Tamil Society.
Few such beliefs are, the Chinese refrain from sweeping and cleaning the house during the Chinese New Year. They also put away the cleaning accessories such as brooms, dustbins, mop sticks at the back yard. They are very particular not to bring these things to the front side of the house. It is very common with the Chinese that while sweeping they sweep the dust inwards and clean away rather than sweeping the dust out wards the house. This belief is very common among the Tamils too.
The Chinese open the doors and windows of the house in significance to oust the bad evils and welcome good fortune. Tamilians do the same, while lighting the lamp in belief that the good fortune is received during that auspicious time.
The Chinese do have a strong belief in the consequences of one’s activities during the Chinese New Year period. So they do not borrow or loan from others; they do not beat the children; they do not utter ill words; they do not convey unfortunate news such as death and accidents; they also do not cry nor sob; they do not wear black colour costumes either. These are very common among the Tamil society too.
Other common rituals are, younger generation seeks blessing of the elders. The elders give them cash in the red colour (favorite color of Chinese) cover called hangbao. The sick people too are dressed well and made to sit in the hall. These are applicable to the Tamilians as well.
The Chinese like the Tamilians too believe in worshipping their forefathers. They have special prayers for their forefathers. Both Societies believe in re-birth.
To conclude with this there are much more common rituals and beliefs that exists among these both Cultures.
