In 2016, the mother Tongue Language (MTL) unit of the public Libraries Group was formed. This was in line with the launch of the national Reading movement, which aims to put greater emphasis on promoting reading in MTL, as well as reading by adults and seniors. The Tamil language services (TLS) team was formed within the MTL group. TLS now look after the collection and programming needs of the national Library as well as the 26 public libraries around the island. The Aug Mo kio public library has the largest Tamil collection, followed by woodlands Regional Library, Jurong Regional Library Tampines Regional Library.
Tamil collections span various genres as adult Fiction, Non-Fiction, young people’s collection and children‘s collection. Besides books, the libraries feature many Tamil magazines, including the only local magazine, Serangoon Times, and audio visual materials .The TLS team is currently focusing on expanding the Tamil e-book collection .In their efforts to promote Tamil language in Singapore, TLS use a multi-pronged approach to reach all sectors of the community.
