Globalisation has resulted in space and time compression. Some years ago, which was days of travel, are now made in a few hours time. This is more than evident in the mobility of people, cutting across barriers among societies. Each one has a reason of travel – work, business, social, visiting, tour and so on. What ever the reason be, Singapore will be a suitable and more conducive country to visit.
Economy
Trade contributes the most to Singapore’s economy, supported by service, manufacturing, tourism, construction, shipping and other sectors. 7% goods sales tax is being imposed, which the tourist can redeem.
Singapore being an open market, all the branded commodities is available. Due to favourable and well regulated economic policies, Singapore taps Multi National Companies and banks stepping up
foreign talents and investments.
Government
Singapore Government follows strict rules and regulations. Singapore parliament is represented by 84 elected Members, 1 Non-Constituent Member and 9 Nominated Members. In the 2006 general elections, two seats were won by the opposition and hence the rest are members of the People’s Actions Party.
Singapore citizens, who are 21 years and above are eligible to vote in the election,
There is no space for corruption, bribery and strike. People’s skills are best utilised to the development of the country.
Members of the Parliament meet the people in their Constituency office, once a week. He also visits people’s house and listens to their problems, which envisages a direct link between the people and the Government.
More over, the community centres conduct various classes, courses and speeches for the benefit of the people. They also have dialogue sessions among the various sections. The Government allocates a sum to help the committee, conduct theses events.
Population
Singapore has a population of over 4.8 million. Chinese are 75.2%, Malays are 13.6%, Indians are 8.8% and other races make up to 2.4%. Chinese, Malay, Tamil and English are the official languages. Singapore currency, notices in the public places, shops all bore writings and information in all the four languages. The National anthem is in Malay – in a country, that has more Chinese population!
Harmony among all races
Government strives to bring harmony among all races. As a part of the measures, all schools celebrate Racial Harmony Day. On that day, the children are expected to come in their own ethnic dress.
During 1964, there was a cultural riot in Singapore. To prevent any further riots, considering the space constraint Singapore, when they planned to build Housing Development Board (HDB) Houses, it was decided that the houses be allocated in proportion to all races.
Such a policy vindicates an opportunity to mix with all the races.
AFETY THE FOREMOST
Singapore has been recognized as one of the safest. One can go around any time with out any fear as it is one of the top rated crime free countries. Everyone is given an Identity Card with an IC number based on their immigration status. That IC number, when keyed in can reveal one’s thorough bio-data.
Various measures are taken by the Government to ensure safety in the country. People are constantly alerted in the SMRT stations through voice messages, to inform the police if they come across any suspicious person or object.
For any kind of such miss- happenings, police get into swift action with due punishment then after. If the case is further taken to court, there too, justice is ensured, as it is widely accepted that the Singapore courts do function efficiently.
A HOME FOR ALL
Singapore is receptive to all people, all over the world. Singapore is potent to deliver jobs to all- low, middle and highly qualified. Low qualified come here to do domestic work (women) and to work at the construction sites (men).
Multi National Companies, banks and other institutions tap highly and reasonably qualified.
TRANSPORTATION OF WORLD STANDARD
Public transportation in Singapore is very convenient connecting from one end of Singapore to another. SMRT (Singapore Mass Rapid Transit System) is fastest, safest and clean.
Similar are the buses and taxis here. Even during midnight, people can travel in Singapore safely. Taxi drivers are very friendly, genuine and non-greedy. A balance even be a ten cent, they return it to the customer.
There are no conductors to issue tickets in public transports. One can either use shillings to purchase a ticket or should have an E-Z-link card (pre-paid card). When the E-Z-link card is tapped in the machine installed in the buses and in the SMRT Stations, it automatically detects the due travel fare.
One has to keep topping up the card and it has multi purpose. It can be used in the National Library to borrow books; it can be used in certain food outlets to eat and also to purchase some products in certain stores.
